Truly Amazing

Computers can do some amazing things these days, and computer graphics can give you some startlingly realistic images. But I think it is incredible when nature trumps technology.

An image from Cassini's first flyby of Saturn's moon Hyperion. Be sure to click the image to go to the story. Then click the link to enlarge the image.

Who would have thought that a moon of Saturn would look like the pumice stone sitting in your bathroom. On the technology side, who would have thought that we could send a camera 1.3 billion km off into space and get such incredible pictures.

And it is not just photos. We get movies from space, too.

Click to play the movie, 4.90 MB. Click here to read the full story.
If you have a slow connection, you should right click the image, or link, and choose "Save target as ..." That way you can watch the movie offline with smooth motion.

This image and movie are from the MESSENGER probe headed for Mercury. As it was leaving Earth, it took a series of pictures. The pictures were put together into a movie showing the Earth as the probe flies away. It looks like stock footage from any number of science-fiction movies, but this time, the images are real. I think it is really beautiful.

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
